5 Common Myths About Cataract Surgery — Cleared Up

Many people delay cataract surgery not because of the cataract, but because of fear — usually based on stories from a relative’s experience decades ago. Cataract surgery has changed enormously since then. Here are five myths worth putting to rest.

Myth 1: “The cataract must be fully ripe before surgery.”

This was true in an older era. Today, with micro-incision techniques, the right time is when the cataract starts affecting your daily life — not when it becomes rock-hard. In fact, waiting too long can make surgery more difficult. More on when it’s time here.

Myth 2: “There will be an injection and stitches.”

At My Vision Eye Care, cataract surgery is done with micro-incision phacoemulsification — through a tiny opening that seals itself. It is sutureless and injection-free, performed under topical (drop) anaesthesia.

Myth 3: “It’s painful.”

Because the eye is numbed with drops, surgery is essentially painless. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable and quick it is, and go home the same day.

Myth 4: “I’ll need to rest in bed for weeks.”

Recovery is usually fast. Most people are back to gentle daily activities within a day or two, following some simple precautions with eye drops and hygiene. You can read what recovery is really like here.

Myth 5: “Any lens will do — they’re all the same.”

Not quite. The intraocular lens (IOL) is a lifelong choice, and the right one depends on your eyes and lifestyle. We use only premium lenses and match them to you — explained in our guide to IOLs.

Modern cataract surgery is one of the safest, most rewarding procedures in all of medicine. The fear is old; the reality is gentle.
