Dry, Gritty Eyes in Ahmedabad? Causes and Simple Relief
Dust, heat, air-conditioning and long screen hours make dry eye especially common in a city like Ahmedabad. Understanding why your eyes feel gritty is the first step to comfort.

If your eyes often feel gritty, tired, watery or as though there’s sand in them, you’re not alone — dry eye is one of the most common complaints we see, and life in a city like Ahmedabad makes it more likely.
Why our environment is hard on tears
Your eyes stay comfortable thanks to a thin, stable tear film. Several everyday things disturb it:
- Dust and wind, which are hard to avoid in and around the city.
- Heat and dry air, which speed up tear evaporation.
- Air-conditioning and fans blowing across the eyes.
- Long hours on screens, during which we blink far less than normal.
Add age and certain medications, and the tear film struggles to keep up.
The confusing symptom: watering
Many people are surprised that dry eye can make the eyes water. When the surface becomes dry and irritated, the eye responds with a reflex flood of tears — but these watery tears drain away quickly and don’t fix the underlying dryness. So watering eyes and dry eyes are often the same problem.
Simple relief you can try
- Blink fully and often, especially during screen work — follow the 20-20-20 habit.
- Use lubricating eye drops (preservative-free if you use them frequently).
- Position fans and AC vents so they don’t blow directly at your face.
- Wear wrap-around sunglasses outdoors to shield against wind and dust.
- Stay well hydrated, and take screen breaks.
When to get it checked
Occasional dryness is normal. But if your eyes are persistently red, painful, or your vision fluctuates, it’s worth an examination — dry eye has several causes and treatments, and some conditions can mimic it. You can read about our dry eye care here.
