You’ve probably heard that carrots are good for the eyes. There’s a grain of truth in it — but the fuller picture is more useful. While no diet can cure an eye disease, good nutrition and sensible habits genuinely help protect your eyes over the long run, especially against age-related conditions.

Foods that support eye health

  • Leafy greens (spinach, methi, other saag) are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, pigments that concentrate in the macula and help protect central vision.
  • Colourful fruits and vegetables — carrots, sweet potato, papaya, bell peppers — provide vitamin A and antioxidants.
  • Fish and omega-3 sources (or flaxseed and walnuts for vegetarians) support the tear film and may ease dry eye.
  • Citrus and other vitamin-C foods, plus nuts and seeds for vitamin E — antioxidants linked to healthier ageing of the eye.

A balanced, colourful plate does more for your eyes than any single “superfood.”

Habits that matter just as much

  • Don’t smoke. Smoking is strongly linked to cataract and macular degeneration — quitting is one of the best things you can do for your sight.
  • Protect against UV with good sunglasses outdoors.

Diet and lifestyle reduce risk and support healthy eyes; they don’t replace treatment when something is wrong. Think of them as the foundation, with regular eye examinations as the safety net.
