Presbyopia: Why Your Arms Suddenly Feel 'Too Short' After 40

Somewhere in your forties, a curious thing happens: the menu, the phone and the newspaper all seem to read better when held a little further away. People often joke that their “arms have become too short.” What’s actually happening is a normal age-related change called presbyopia.

What is presbyopia?

Inside your eye is a flexible natural lens that changes shape to focus on near objects — a process called accommodation. With age, this lens gradually stiffens and loses flexibility, making it harder to focus up close. It happens to everyone, usually becoming noticeable after 40, and it’s unrelated to whether you’ve needed glasses before.

Common signs

  • Holding reading material at arm’s length
  • Needing brighter light to read comfortably
  • Tired eyes or headaches after close work
  • Blurred near vision, especially in dim light or when tired

What can be done

Presbyopia is very manageable, and there are more options than ever:

  • Reading glasses — the simplest solution for near tasks.
  • Progressive (multifocal) spectacles — one pair that handles distance, intermediate and near.
  • Multifocal contact lenses — for those who prefer to be spectacle-free.
  • Lens-based options — if you also have a developing cataract, certain premium intraocular lenses can address distance and near vision together at the time of cataract surgery.

The right choice depends on your eyes, your daily tasks and your preferences — which is exactly what a good examination and conversation will sort out.

An important note

Presbyopia is normal — but a sudden change in near or distance vision is worth having checked, as it can occasionally point to something else. A comprehensive eye examination will clarify what’s going on.

Presbyopia isn’t a problem with your eyes so much as a milestone of using them well for four decades. It’s easily accommodated.
